![]() Against the dispassionate greed of wealth-hoarding, resource-churning grown-ups, Lockwood & Co. In Hughes’s film The Breakfast Club, the teens stuck in weekend detention agreed that when you grow up, your heart dies in Lockwood & Co., Cornish pushes that statement to its figurative extreme, and puts it under a financial lens. As creator, showrunner, and writer-director of the premiere and finale episodes, Cornish sharpens that characterization in Lockwood & Co., in which adults get rich off the life-threatening exertion of children. Think of how Boyega’s Moses characterizes the government’s reaction to aliens killing Black and POC teens in Attack the Block - “They don’t care, man” - and how cops will later blame him for the murders. There isn’t a ton of intergenerational trust in Cornish’s filmography, and that’s because it hasn’t been earned. The Cornish cinematic universe is full of latchkey working-class kids figuring out, on their own, how to fill their after-school and weekend hours while their parents toil to keep them afloat, and instead of offering support or protection, police, teachers, and other guardians usually occupy accusatory and antagonistic roles. With Lockwood & Co., Cornish makes that elder-youth divide explicit, and weights it with confrontational commentary. These stories consistently center adolescent emotion as a driving force of action, and Attack the Block and The Kid Who Would Be King employed an implied binary in which adults were either intimidating or irrelevant. as a gateway to explore how teens feel, what they’re scared of and what they yearn for, and how they want to prove themselves to their friends and comrades in arms. Cornish uses the sci-fi and horror genres - the aliens of Attack the Block, the medieval world of The Kid Who Would be King, and the ghosts of Lockwood & Co. But what has become more clear in the years since that John Boyega–starring cult hit about teens defending their South London neighborhood from invading extraterrestrials is that Cornish’s cinematic mind-set owes a debt to teen whisperer John Hughes, too. ![]() With his first film, 2011’s Attack the Block, Cornish drew comparisons to the ’80s oeuvre of Steven Spielberg, with whom he worked on The Adventures of Tintin many times has this viral tweet about kids killing aliens with hammers been reshared with a One Perfect Shot–style joke tying together Attack the Block and Spielberg’s E.T.: The Extra Terrestrial. It’s the adults as bad bosses and abusive employers, and in his first TV series, Cornish has crafted a coming-of-age narrative that stands in for a kind of class war. The ghosts aren’t the enemies in the stylishly designed and smartly written Lockwood & Co. There’s no power attached to these gifts, no real social or financial capital. If there’s something strange in your neighborhood, call the child soldiers. Only teenagers who reveal extrasensory abilities are strong enough to fight the ghosts, or “visitors,” and they work for agencies that underbid one another for jobs and send their young employees out on dangerous missions. Jacobs (Andrew Woodall) discuss her contract. In “This Will Be Us,” the first episode of Joe Cornish’s Netflix series Lockwood & Co., 13-year-old Lucy (Ruby Stokes) sits in a drab office, her gaze unfocused as her mother (Sandra Huggett) and her future employer Mr. Spoilers follow for the first season of Netflix’s Lockwood & Co. Each point of Strength increases your Physical Damage by 0.2%, or 0.8% each time you spend an Attribute Point (since you get 4 Strength). The only exception is with Staves, which do not deal Physical Damage. Strength increases the Physical Damage of the player, and not only adds this increase to the base damage of the Weapon you are using, but to any Skills that deal Physical Damage. Hybrid Builds generally need to spend points here because one of their Skill Trees provides no Energy. Casting Builds will consume much more Energy than Martial Builds, so depending on how you make your character you may need to add points into this Attribute. Unlike Health, however, there are no quests that reward permanent increases to Energy. Again, like Health, this will depend on the Skill Tree, and not all Skill Trees provide Energy. You gain +40 Energy per Attribute Point spent, and you will gain Energy when spending Skill Points on the Mastery of any Skill Tree that gives Energy. ![]() Like Health, Energy is a pretty straight forward. Melee Builds will obviously need more than Ranged Builds so plan accordingly, but generally you should not need to spend Attribute Points on Health. You will also gain permanent Health bonuses from completing quests for a total of 855 (if you complete all 3 difficulties). How much you gain depends on which Skill Trees you have, and I have listed them in the table below, along with other Attributes. You gain +40 Health per Attribute Point spent, and you will also gain Health when spending Skill Points on the Mastery of each of your two Skill Trees. There are 5 main Attributes in Titan Quest and loads of other Stats. Each Attribute you spend will give you either 40 Health, 40 Energy, +4 Strength, +4 Intelligence or +4 Dexterity. It is unlikely you will reach level cap though as it takes hundreds of hours, so realistically you’re looking at some where around 140 ish Attribute Points. You gain 2 Attribute Points per level, and gain a few here and there through various quests, giving you a total of 166 Attribute Points to spend if you complete all three difficulties and do all related Side Quests. The first thing we’ll talk about is Attributes because they are extremely important to the way you build your character, and unlike Skill Points, you cannot refund Attribute Points, so if you spend them incorrectly then you are pretty screwed. This is particularly pertinent to Builds, and is information you may have a harder time finding now that the Titan Quest forums are no longer online. Ultimately though the gameplay isn’t for me. I liked piecing together information and trying to discover what had happened. I realised the timed sections were going to keep coming and as I really wasn’t enjoying them decided to call it a day. I then had another quick look at a walkthrough when I kept dying from electric shocks in another part I disliked – precision movements, very tricky when you are floating around. I made it most of the way through the Pearson Spacestation which I think is about a quarter of the way through the game. It seems like an easy option to make a puzzle more difficult, when I’d have preferred harder puzzles that weren’t timed. However the timed sections just kept coming, and every time my heart would sink. I tried to persevere with the timed sections – I did briefly flick through a walkthrough to check how frequent they would be and felt it would be manageable. This is earth, not the moon – a great view out of the spaceship window Thankfully there are no major consequence for failing, you just start back at the beginning of the timed sequence. Zee noted that “several mechanisms have been proposed: sleep loss, circadian misalignment, eating later in the day and being exposed to less morning light and more evening light, which have all been shown to affect insulin sensitivity.” “There is good evidence that being a late sleeper has been linked to a higher risk for metabolic and cardiovascular disease.” Phyllis Zee, director of the Center for Circadian and Sleep Medicine at Northwestern University and not involved with the study, told CNN. CNN noted that people who are chronically misaligned with their body clock are said to have “social jet lag.” That could disrupt their natural body clock. He noted that night owls might still have to go to work in the morning, so they get up early. “A potential explanation is they become misaligned with their circadian rhythm for various reasons, but most notably among adults who work.” “Night owls are reported to have a higher rate of obesity, Type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease when compared to early birds,” he said. He said it could be a “mismatch” between the time people go to bed and wake up, and their natural circadian rhythms. Steven Malin, a professor at Rutgers who led the study, told The Guardian that his team had not decoded why the two groups of people had metabolism that worked differently. Trouble sleeping? Try this ancient technique.Instead of burning fat for fuel, the study found that night owls used carbohydrates for energy. While the two groups were similar in body composition, the early risers were more sensitive to insulin blood levels and they burned more fat while they were exercising and resting. The former are also more active throughout the day, using more fat, while their late-night counterparts tend to store more. Researchers from Rutgers University found that those who get up early use more fat during both rest and exercise, regardless of their aerobic fitness, compared to the late-to-bed folks. That’s according to a study in the journal Experimental Physiology. People who get up early in the morning seem to burn more fat as an energy source and are often more active than those who stay up late. New research suggests that night owls may be more likely to develop heart disease or diabetes than early birds. ![]() If you pride yourself on staying up late to watch TV or catch up on reading and other tasks, you might want to flip your schedule a bit. |
